## Chapter 4 : The Underground Puppet Show

Last night - I went to watch a friend perform a puppet show in a basement of some hipster cafe called Gather.
Formally what looked like either a place for the horses or slaves - there was In a storage pantry - that was converted into a small room - for a puppet show.

Be

The Premiere Hipster Cafe, Koffee? But everyone knows it as “coffee with a K” - they’d even say it - and spell the word out

- “hey do you want to meet at coffee with a K” - i wonder what other business could be used the same.
Are you going to “Soup with an S?” Butter it with some Bread with a B?

All of this to say was that my coffee was from gCafe - but I let it slide and hid it close - I found a little coaster and put the Koffee slipped it over my coffee - so folks would think that it was from Koffee? But I knew it was from gCafe - and they knew that I knew and they knew and we marched. Because honestly who cares - i’ll most likely buy a cup from them.

There’s plenty of busking to be shared and loved to be had - but for tonight was about being in the heart of the havens - Koffee?

The lights dimmed - and the background hum faded voice by voice.

Starting in complete darkness,
A single spotlight illuminated the stage - revealing a lowly empty flower pot - resting on a barstool.
Two hands emerge from the backdrop.
A sudden flick of the wrist and the a drum kicks off a slow melancholic beat.

“Brizz Burger Bumble Bee - hocus pocus focus on it
Guide light the way
and set this fruit in focus

plant o mighty plant
plant what ye desire
Filthy old fizzywiggle
set your house on fire.

Brute brutish brutish city
Mop the floor with ash
Lovely little golden dreams.

Checks with and hard cash
Grow plants grow
Grow grow
Grown planty grow

I didn't see the rest of the show - I snuck out back and puffed a heater before - Marboro 27s - not nearly the cowboy killers I usually snatch but they were close enough. Seems like I'm hanging with the cool kids these days - but who knows anymore. These havens are strange. There’s much life here - but it goes away every six months or so.

I heard that Beckett gave up on the show - that she now teaches spin classes and works at a butcher shop. I still see her from time to time, but a certain spark of friendship seems to have fizzled. Too much time has passed, too many encounters on random little artistic popups and backyard parties. We had our walks and talks and shared our fears - but now we’re friendly neighborhood strangers. Always encountering one another at a place - sharing a quick line or two of witty dialog - and that’s it. That’s it.

## Chapter 5: Views from the Havens - Mainly People Watching From Outside my Blinds

When I first moved to the havens - I was lost.

The land ladies of the apartment I rented off of Saint John's street - a stone's toss from Wooster Square - kept insiting that the street was safe - and that them two, sisters by blood, kept there eye's peeled and that - overall - it was a safe neighborhood. They kept saying it over and over - to the point - where I realized, it wasn't safe at all.

The first night - I caught someone ruffling through the garbage. At first I thought it was merely racoons - but as I looked oustide - sheepilsly through my window blinds - I saw a man dig through the recycle bin - and indifferently toss - out what he didn't find acceptable. Putting the other and the rest of the recycles in his garbage bin.

Fuck this - thought I - fuck this mothefucker who is just tossing trash around - serves him that he's a homeless. Ruining. Judging, hating, I felt zero empathy towards him. Sick of the dirty libs letting this happen. I realized that I was my father's son all along.

Fuck.

The next day - I went outside and saw that the

##

Not knowing what to do with myself, my time, having not a single friend, I would wander the street during the day and seldo

I didn't know why I was there - or what was the vibe of the place. Surely it was a mix of demographics - there were folks on the streets - tattered and toothless - then the young gangsters with ski masks and dressed all black. The year was 2017 and I recently turned 27 - after a long life along the scatttered coast of the Hudson River. I needed a change.

Prior to moving to the havens I survived a bunch of odd jobs here and there - there and here.

I sought out little corners and alleyways - shortcuts - thinking that they would lead somewhere.
And for the most part they did.
Chapel street mostly.
But some didn’t.
I didn’t know what to make of this place. I couldn’t put my finger on it. But I always kept a pack of index cards in the left pocket, in case some description struck.
It rarely did.

Wandering pondering fool - was I.
A wandering pondering fool.

I would meet some friendly homeless folks - asking for a dollar but really just looking for a conversation. I realized early on - to just lend them an ear - and ask them how they’re doing - and remind them that they are some good people. And if you do that - you will win their trust - and then little by little - it’s fun to run into them - they always hype you up - remind you that God is for you - and it’s the best. They are of the childlike variety indeed indeed.

Problematic.

I tried to get to know my neighbors, but at first, it seemed like the only folks who wanted to talk to me were homeless. Lest, they were the only ones that would actively strike up a conversation. Mostly it started with them asking for money, but eventually it would graduate into something more colorful.
Usually it was about their past, how they had it and how they lost it, and I felt for them.
For I felt lost too.
And we shared a certain loneliness that arouses when one wanders a city alone.

## Chapter 6: Everyone, who's anyone, has got something going on

New Haven is an interesting city - seems like everyone here has a highly defined purpose.
Lest it seems like they do.
Especially them Yallies.
Oh the Yallies.
How does one describe them without writing an ode and breaking into a shanty?
Lot of hipsters I drink with at three sheets - cast shade on them Yallies. But I like them.
I like them Yallies.
They come and gentrify the city they say -
But I don’t think so.
I think they come here to study.
Lest that was until I met Randolph

## Chapter 7: Randolph Curtis

Randolph
I didn’t know what to think of Randolph at first. When he first showed up to the apartment - he had nothing but a smile and a backpack. In the spirit of breaking ice, I decided the best move forward was to give a tour of the house. He remained silent when I showed him the basement - the living room - the kitchen.
Silent. But when we finally got to his room - the silence turned into a deep gaze - and I watched his eyes pace left and right - as if focused on some tiny invisible marble - “Randolph”- said I “how’s it going?”
Snapping out of it - he turned and smiled “doin better than I deserve mate” . And gave me a hug as if he knew me my entire life. “Aye yi mate - mind if I make us some lunch?”

Lunch turned into dinner - dinner into chess - Chess into a fire outdoor - a fire outdoor to a guitar sesh. He played beautifully and the stars showed up that night.

I couldn’t get over his accent - it was a wild blend of gypsy irish. I thought I heard folks talk like him before- but I was wrong.
I can't remember exactly what we talked about on that first night.
It’s all a bit of a blur
But I enjoyed talking with him
And was thankful Chris posted that craigslist ad.

It was all about an inverted cast iron skillet. We were debating wether we can defrost meat. He looked at in a while - and “I think we should just run it in a bag over water for a while - to like - sort of defrost it.

One day in the third week of his arrival, Randolph showed up sad.
I’ve never seen him before this way.
By this time, I knew his routine.
He’d wander down to East Rock Coffee - on his bike that he bought at the devil's gear on the second day. And since then - he would show up every single evening, promptly, at 6pm - Carrying a big smile - and an even bigger bag of fresh bag of random produce.
There was a lot of cooking in those early days. Lots of provisions.
I never knew where he went - I never asked.
All I knew was that he was going to the DIV school in the fall.
I mostly left him alone.
But today, I felt called to talk to him, but he didn’t want to talk.
He was silent and pacing. Back and forth outside the porch - he rolled up a Bugler, and then he rolled up another and then a final one - which he passed to me - and went inside.
I lit the little white stick - and in a moment's time - he was back outside with a guitar.
Outside the house on East Rock he sang :
“Woe yo a blo is I
Takes a feather make me cry
Been everywhere the sun has shown.
take my heart - o dear sweet Lord
make me no enemy
for time is time and time rules all
but you control the sea.
I can’t take it
I can’t shake it
the weary heart of man
bring forth some guidance for I know not where I stand. “

## Chapter 8 : Building a Boat - Taking Stock

Nothing much happened for a while
Nothing much happened for a while, until the day that Randolph came home with a bunch of home depot supplies - a bunch of various little tools - all shrink wrapped.
Where was he getting the money I wondered.
It looked like he was building a boat.

Chapter 8b: Taking Stock of it all

It was late fall of that same year i moved in that house. It was a bit of a bit of a far cry from the Wooster apparentment. I asked the landlady who was working from the P&M management offices (a slum Lord from what someone at the shop told me) if it was a safe neighborhood. Yes yes, of course Mr. Otto - of course - it is incredibly safe - mostly just Yale Post Grads and young families - the word "safe spot kept coming up"

At this point - I drove and walked around a little to now when things got dicey - it didn't take long - it was super obvivous. I mean - things where inside looks wild - I walked over - and hde didn't have a womn - he just bought it scolol. NOt konwing what t otmake of this amnn - I passwed a minute.

Chapter 9
Winter time around the Havens - the first week of January off the New Year means that town is a tad dry. Brisk and snappy. The students have properly gone back to where-ever they properly came from and the young professionals who work from home went back home. All that’s left of this city are young families, hipster baristas and the occasional med-school post-doc who couldn’t go home.
I was excited and fully expected to relish in the city-wide desolation and the landscape of a lonely city.
I had a big project to do at work - for the last year I was hired as a brand manager at a startup that got seed funding like every young professional ought to.
My job - ultimately - was to define the look and feel of our company and brand to the greater world. I was an ad man, a mad man, and everything in between. But no one knew that. Walking around the Havens - chest puffed with a project - I suffered silently.
I walked to what was formerly Blue State Coffee on Orange - and found that it turned into the Gcafe - which is encouraging to see the business grow. I kept it moving though - there was a friendly guy who used to frequent the spot and I didn’t want to engage in any small talk.
Walked down Edwards towards State street and headed down to the Coffee Peddler. There was a guy outside having a cig and I briefly checked my pants before I forgot that I don’t smoke manufactured cigs anymore - just the rolls, just the rolls - though I’ve been trying to get carried with the vape situation. Nicotine Justifications.
I walked past the smoke and asked for a small cortado - which I was kindly reminded of the fact that there is only one size for a Cortado. I could have a double Cortado - but didn’t want to spend the penny. that they only had one size.
I never understood that about the Cortado.
Huckabee Huckabee”
I turned and faced Sara Joy.
“Large Chai Latte on my friends tab please”
“Just like that eh?”
“What are you doing around East Rock?” said she
“We’re not around East Rock we’re on state” said I
“We are on state for sure.” “I guess”
We sat in silence for a while and sipped our coffee - too much time had passed since I last saw her and I didn't know how to break the ice - nor if I should.
I had some crayons and index cards in my pocket by chance so I put them on the table.
I grabbed a purple, and drew a small boy on a mountain holding a balloon with a smiley face open- mouthed with diamond encrusted grills spelling “hope” - before passing it over to her.
She read it - raised an eyebrow - and gently folded before placing it in her back pocket.
“So what’s up” said I
“You tell me - how have you been, where have you been? Tell me what I need to know.” said she
“You tell me what you need to know, I don’t know - what do you want to hear?”
“Davey”
“What”
“I’m your friend.”
“I am your friend too” said I
“So we got that far.”
“This is a bit much” said I “I got to do some work”
“Oh Davey…
Davey
Davey Davey”
She reached over and touched my arm.
“Sara-Joy”
“What are you doing around East Rock? I thought you only hang out around the chapel.”
“I’m here for a job interview” -
“What Job?” asked I
“Store Manager” answered she
“What happened to Pedals? I thought you liked it there.”
“I loved my time there. But figured I need to start a new path where I belong. There was no future in the smoothie business. I want to be out there meeting people and hosting events. What are you working on?”
“I don’t know - a thousand things and nothing all at once” answered I.
She smiled and we sipped.
Tame Impala dropped on the radio - some banger - she began to bop her head a bit.
“I miss playing music with you Davey - Huckleberry Davey”
“That name will never stick - too on the nose”
“Oh people don’t care.”
“Screw what they care” said I - “They must. They have to. If not, why do it?”
“You’re asking me?” said she “Yeah - I haven’t heard you drop anything in a bit - and wondering which instruments what’s growing dust around your house.”
“Everything collects dust Davey.”
Chapter 10
I told Sara I had a meeting in 15 minutes and had to go to the office - she understood and we touched hands before I bounced out of the Coffee Peddler.
I walked home instead and admired the desolate wasteland of commerce around me. In the distance somewhere near the foot school up East Rock stood the giant warehouse that housed our office.
I didn’t like the office. It was one of those giant coworking meccas called “The District '' and was desperately trying to become a weWork back when weWork was weWork. It was nice enough on paper - pretty enough on its website - large, vast with modern glass dividing the rat cages - but I couldn’t take it. I find it inorganic and borderline offensive - and it smells a little like the evil futuristic experiment one finds on Black Mirror.
Home was nice - and no one was home - which was nicer. I plugged in my laptop to a large curved screen and passively listened to some high level tech talk on twitter space. I could have skipped it. I had myself on mute and walked over to the acoustic sitting pretty next to the couch. I grabbed it and began to strum it in that tune that Bren strummed the other day.
I didn’t know what was wrong with me - but something was wrong with me. Things were becoming numb - and no fiddle nor the guitar supplicated the feeling of aimlessness. I had free time and didn’t know how to spend it.
I thought a bit about thoughts - and the nature of it all. Thought of the strange workings of the mind where ideas dwell and lead the imagination towards imagery.
I wrote a poem about it but didn’t like how it sounded out loud, so I gave up on it and decided to let some other chum publish their thoughts on thoughts.

Went downstairs and found a sea of cables spread across the kitchen table. I grabbed one - seemed like they were for some giant speaker - I knew Kenny Lewis must have been somewhere close but couldn’t confirm. That man has a habit of keeping his schedule close to the chest. This table will be spotless by the day's end - or these cables will live here for 3 weeks. Time will tell.
I grabbed some chummy metal coffee cup that looked like it was meant for a camp trip and made my way to the makeshift - unspoken - often chaotic - coffee station that organically found its home on top of an Ikea nightstand.
I skimmed through various coffee cans and admired the differences between expensive hipster flex moves and early morning desperate Monday trips to Aldi. The contrast was vast. I concluded with some Cafe Bostello and admired the city skyline out the window and thought about time.
Soon this January will turn into February - and February will probably turn into March, eventually.
I smelt the coffee ready but still felt like time was drifting - drifting away - and that the transient nature of these Havens was beginning to show its wear on my bones.
thought about Sara - and wondered how the job interview went. Probably well. Her charm can charm the brutist of brutes - and she knew it. To hell with her, thought I. I will not succumb to her perfume - for one sniff can turn a sane man injust. I wondered what she thought of me. Was I just another victim to her ways? I listened to her song and missed her. Missed those moments where we sat looking at the stars and talking about dreams. Holding hands. We never kissed but that was by choice.
I took note to ask her next time I see her - and I stumbled down the stairs for some wine.

## Chapter 11: Rollin to Abate with the Gypsies

As I ventured towards the kitchen I heard the loud snap of the door banging against the wall and heard some grunting and crashing sounds.
I stepped out on the porch Dave was packing a pipe on the rocking chair we recently found - I spotted Dominic and his two brothers Sam and Gino dressed in suits - taking boxes and boxes out of the back of some rusty minivan.
Dominic spotted me and tossed the box into a pile.
“David - how are you doing?”
Hey David, Hey David, his brothers uttered in unison .
“Dominic - what’s this about”
“Kenny asked for help moving some boxes out of storage“
“And the suits?”
“Just came from a funeral.”
“I’m sorry to hear”
“No worries, He’s with the Lord - plus we didn’t know the guy who died - we’re friends with the guy who rents out the machinery that lifts the graves into their cemetery
“It’s good business” - Yes - “Good Business - Good Business” Echoed Sam and Gino.
“That’s kind of you” answered I “What’s in the box?”
“Heck do I know” - - “Yeah that’s not our Job” rattled Sam in the distance from afar “We just move them” answered Gino “move and grove - move and grove”
New security system for the house” answered Kenny Lewis as he walked out the door.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah - they stole my catalytic converter last night.”
“Who did?” asked I
“We’re going to find out.”
Kenny Lewis opened up a box in front of me revealing a tiny camera with a clamp.
“Going to put these all over - front of the house - backyard - they got night vision.”
“And then what?” asked I
“Then - we could show it to the police next time it happens.”
“What are we just going to sit around and let it happen again for bait?” asked I
Kenny Lewis wasn’t listening as he began to dive into some tiny instruction manual.
Dave Gunn was on the porch lighting a wooden corn cobbler pipe
“See man what you need is a net gun - little swoo swo - ma goo goo - ya know what I mean about that action? - little pull the trigger action - BAM - net firing high speed - perp hits the floor - NET GUN SON - be super less leathal. Which is what you want baby - WHAM! - net gun - perp hits the floor - you call the fuzz - all take place before high noon and you and the chum bucket english prick can enjoy some high poetry.
“Krok’s from South Africa”
“Same sugar if you ask me - Wham - Net Gun”

ramshackled in net - you take a picture - WHAM - bring it to the fuzz - you know it - gotta get that net-gun in your life son. ”
Tyler popped out the porch door and let the m
“Dave - you got that cologne - i’m meeting some chick at the sheets.”
You don’t need cologne.
Dave turned to me.
“Amateur”
…
Gino came up to me as I sat outside the porch of the house on 115 Foster Street. I admired the red door and the weather.
It was spring in this little windy wendy city - and the birds began to chirp a bit - and then - every once and a while - I’d hear the smash -
I marveled that I was able to tune all of this out - despite the chaos around me - of moving boxes - yelling in romanian gypsy words - that are foreign to me - and arguagably tickles my fancy more than I care to admit.

- just when the city was waking up. Today was a Monday morning - early - and everyone
  And waiting for the door.
I looked up - “You waiting for Alex?”
  “Yeah”
“Good man” - “Good man - good man”
Alex came downstairs dressed in stylish pajamas - like something justin beieber would were - tight and grey - like a boxer. He was a bit out of breath and had a bandana around his head - covering his bald spot.
He gave me a quick nod and salute as he handed over to Dominic - around 85 dollar -from what I counted - and anyt
“You can take anything that you want to sell - any kind of metal - any kind of scraps - hit it up - we are in a process of weeding this ye backyard out - understand boys?”
  “Yes Alex”
  Thank you Dominic -
He rushed outside and opened the door - barefoot as he dodged pebbles. He walked around the backyard and at the pile.
Alright Alex - that’s going to be a clean buck 50 - and we can call it from there - don’t worry about the payment now - no - we’ll meet sometime next week when I have more time - and we can talk about getting those records out from the attic.
Sounds good my friend - thanks Alex - thank you. “
  Alex went back upstairs
“Hey yo - main character name - you get dinner?”
“No I haven’t said I” - but it’s about to be that time I suppose”
“Yeah - do you want to come with us? We can hold you down on some buffalo wild wings - or abbate. You know Franke Pepes?
  “I know Frank Pepes, yes - “ -
It’s right down the block - Abate it’s good.
Yeah - I mean - it’s okay - we don’t have too high of standards. - No no - we like the deal - right Sam ?
“Do you know about the Yale50 promo at Papa Johns? You don’t even need to be a student - you could simply just call them and

“Yeah - it’s the place right next to taht - Abate” - It’s like Pepe’s but better - more of that deep dish. That or Pizza Hut - but that’s the bread and butter as we call it in the gypsy -” Dominic smiled

“No worries, he’s with the Lord - plus we didn’t know the guy who died - we’re friends with the guy who digs the graves with the big lift - and his daughter is in town from Florida so we stepped in and helped for the day”
“That’s kind of you” answered I “What’s in the box?”
“Heck do I know” - - “Yeah that’s not our Job” answered Sam from afar “We just move them” answered Gino
“See man what you need is a net gun - little swoo swoo action - little pull the trigger action - BAM - net firing high speed - perp hits the floor - ramshackled in net - you take a picture - WHAM - bring it to the fuzz - you know it - gotta get that net-gun in your life son. ”
Tyler popped out the porch door and let the m
“Dave - you got that cologne - i’m meeting some chick at the sheets.”
You don’t need cologne.
Dave turned to me.

ENTRY 2

writes pt5.5

Start of book:
I decided to run for Alderman the day I found out that Blue State Coffee will now be serving snickerdoodle cookies.

It just all got to my head.
It was all I thought about for a good two days.
But I didn’t complain, for they were a good two days of thinking.
Thinking about words.
Words.
The power of words.
The power of words can change a heart.
The power of words that can convince a franchise owner to call their distributor and take a risk to a custom order of snickerdoodle cookies - all because some words written down, during a bout of procrastination, on a legal letter, stuffed gently into a suggestion box.
After that realization my words caused long lasting sustainable action.
And more.
And then one day I realized.
Words are the tools in which leaders lead. Not physical. Not their ability to learn Python. Tried and tested - historically -

So I started writing some of my own down.
And then I started writing down some more.
And in time the words turned into phrases - phrases into plans.
In my spare time of course.
Which in those days, I had much of.
But didn’t want to admit it.
I had a reputation that I was ultra bus
I would tell people that I was ultra busy.
For the fear of becoming busy.
And not having time to write these words.
And word by word.
Somehow I stumbled upon a manifesto.
A declaration to the land which I dwelled.
Connecticut.
New Haven.
And I had some time.
So I thought.
That was before I was elected Elderman.
And certainly before Kenny Lewis and I found that gold coin.

(THIS IS AFTER THE PREVIOUS SUBMISSION ((Birthday Party Scene)) )
Chapter 17
It was a weird time in the havens - that mid-march pre spring break season where students stay in class - or their dorms - or wherever it is that they wander when I don’t see them scattering about Chapel street.
That time where it is too cold to go outside and still too depressing to stay in. That time where people aren’t able to make up their mind about what kind of people they are. That New England season where the fog and rain and the snow and the sun and the moon and the stars all have that grand opry and the bossum of their party result in mud/. You know the deal.

I didn’t care much those days - and that bothered me - so I made it a point to look for things to care about.
I spent a great deal of time wandering - not with my feet, but with my car - in and out of the havens - in and out.
Out of the city - into the city - in and out of the coast - driving for no reason at all - but to drive - and to think, I thought. I’d listen to the same obscure indie artist and this one EP a thousand million times - and that was convient being the only cd I had on track.
I loved it and had little choice elsewhere - and I still didn’t know what the lyrics were - but I enjoyed the raspy background synth and the ghastly effect. It was the price to pay to avoid the e-mails and the websites and the work.

I celebrated the day, when I discovered that the route leading to lighthouse state park is not exclusive to i95. In other words, I no longer had to dread the chaos that road brings. It all could be handled via the backwoods of Water Street.
And then after Water street - if you made a left on Forbes - you could find yourself on Townsend road and indeed - whose namesake was an accurate description - for it truly was the end of the town. Well, one town.
A quick left would lead you down towards East Haven beach - down on 142 but once I found route 142 - and attributed it to the same road I saw once on some cliff somewhere in California - I was convinced that this road, this street, this vista - this bloody haven - would all match the vibes of something like costal California - if it wasn’t for the damn Long Island. Yes, folks would frolic - and it would turn into a beach-town, at an exponential rate, yes yes indeed - exponential - all with the simple introduction to ocean waves. Lest, that’s what I thought. But what could one do?
On 142 - I discovered Branford - and all of its little Thimble Islands and made a vow that somehow, someway, one day - I would find myself out living on one of those islands - and I looked for a piece of paper to write down to research marina docking fees - but had none.
I kept driving and found myself at Nellie’s by the sea - a cheeky - expensive - quality marina restaurant that begged to serve me Corn Beef and Cabbage but served great fish and chips. I stared out at the Edison bulbs swinging outside and silently judged the middle-aged waitress waffling about her exploits in college during Saint Patrick’s day. I looked at the boats. And in a way, they looked back on me. All pristine, shrink wrapped in pure white canvas, with the sun, basking on the hype of their glory.
I wanted a boat.
I really did.
I overstayed my welcome at the Marina with the full intention of driving onwards into inland Branford - perhaps go lift some weights at Planet Fitness - but the nautical temptation was too strong - stronger than I have ever felt it.
So instead, I cheated on my one week spree of lifting weights every other day - and drove around Guilford - and took every little left with no big agenda beyond to know how far I could drive outwards to the island.
There were times on the coast I felt like a Kennedy.
There were times on the coast I felt like a sketch ball.
There were times on the coast I didn’t know how I felt.
One thing was for certain. I enjoyed the coast.
Yes. Yes, I did.
I could ramble more about how what I thought about those endlessly grey days and the condition of my mind - but this is not a therapy session. I will save my pity for a pretty party and some vent to some girl among an old oak wood bar.
No, this book is not a journal - nor a vent.

Chapter 18? (I don’t know the chapters anymore)
I was with Kenny Lewis the day he found that gold coin.
I was with him when he laid it on the kitchen table.
I was with him when he held it on a metal tong and put it through an industrial bunsen burner looking thing.
I watched him dip it in acid - and nod to himself, that it was indeed, gold.

I was with him when he went to the Guilford coin exchange and they told him that they have never seen something a coin quite like this before, that they had to go out and get word from Bethel.
“What’s in Bethel?” Asked I - “My brother.”
/_Additions from hand writing at common grounds _/
We took a ride to Guilford Gold Coin Shop\* - a small, dry pastel green storefront with a rainbow neon open sign. The whole place could have been mistaken for a place that cashes checks - but we marched nonetheless.
I didn’t care much about the outcome - for I knew there was no way that Kenny Lewis would sell it - rather, I just wanted a human’s mouth to breathe excitement over it. I wanted to gauge the interest in Kenny’s eyes as he gleaned upon the gold coin - wanted to keep this knowledge in the back pocket - in case needed for future leverage.
The store had a bunch of watches and jewerely hanging. Several choice piece medallions scattered about - this way and that. Truth be told, I knew nothing of Gold but my chest puffed out none-the-less.
“I’ve never seen something like this before.”
“So, you must not be able to properly appraise it.” Asked I
Salty, thought I - I need to cool down the jets a bit. I didn’t trust this man - but needed his help - lest a couple of more keywords that I can make use of.
We talked on the way back, I asked about where he thought it could have come from. I suggested the lost colonel of Roanoke - but that was just an excitable imagination, for I was getting excited.
I mean” - asked I - what are the chances that

I drove Kenny down to the Merritt parkway - past Ridgefield - past Seymor, and on the way - we drove in silence - as the city cement turned into gnarled trees - as if we rambling down some low valley- in that 2 lane backwoods deathtrap.
When we met the man in his shop amid some Dunkin Donut express amid some Connecticut shopping center - between a Payless and a chiropractor - and I was nervous.
It was my job to do the waffling. To sell the dream. To get the handshake. Kenny Lewis was the smarts - I was the looks. And I was nervous.
Nervous because I realized the weight of the moment.
Nervous because I realized that this would either encourage or discourage Kenny Lewis.
Nervous about being nervous and was nervous that I didn’t know the direct immediate answer as to why I am nervous at all.
We learned that the man who ran the shop was a fellow by the name of Ian Chambers. Or something like that.
We cut the small talk and Kenny was quick to hand over the coin.
He was a tall fellow with a big white beard. Kind of gave an old math professor vibe. We met him outside a Dunkin’ Donuts outside the merit - and I offered to buy him his cup.
We got straight into business - Kenny took the coin out from a leather pouch he tied around his waist. For a moment I took a step back and admired the ridiculousness of the occasion.
“Where did you find this?” Asked Mr Chambers
Kenny looked at me briefly. And looked back at Mr Chambers.
“What” - “what are you worried about - that this old man is going to go out and look for more? I can barely walk.”
“And you don’t know anyone who could walk on your behalf?” Asked I
Mr Chambers gave me half of a smirk and continued to inspect the coin.
“This is old, lad” “this is old”
“Looks Spanish”
“Spanish?” Asked I “This is New England. Didn’t those Spanish folks settle down south? New Orleans and stuff?”
Mr Chambers looked at Kenny - “Where did you get this guy?” “Who is this guy? Why is he speaking on your behalf - are you not the one with the coin?”
“Don’t worry about me” said I - “I am here for moral support - that’s all - but enough fluff hankering - Mr Chambers - how much is this worth?” Pressed I.
“Well,
“It’s around 3 ounces of gold” which was the standard back then (research) so it’s about 10,000 dollars or so.

We drove home in silence. Kenny looked out the window of the passenger and we passed through the coast of Milford back on our way to the havens. The march sky was weird, it was almost 6pm and cold - but felt like the summer. Aye.
We got a beer at the Old Heinberg bar off of Chapel and sat in silence for a while.
“How many coins do you think are there?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, if you found one - it’s bound that we have find another.”
“Bound?”
“I’d say.”
“I mean how couldn’t that not be the case?”
“What?”
“How couldn’t it be that near that one coin, there is another hundred just like it. 100 times 10,000 is a million dollars.”
“And that’s saying it’s just 100 - there could easily be 500 - which would be 5 million.”
“Thanks for the math lesson.”
I took a swig and banged it on the table.
“I mean it man, what do we have to loose?” What’s the risk of going out there again and looking -
“Why do you need 5 million dollars?”
“Why do you need 5 million dollars?” Asked I
“I don’t need 5 million dollars.”
“Really?” Asked I “So all of those talks of blimps and holograms - they’re just going to fund themself?”
“They’d probably going to be funded via a research grant.”
“A research grant, from… Yale?”

End of Chapter

Chapter 20: The Start of the Treasure Hunt

So, by and by, as the days grew - so did Kenny’s Lewis thoughts.
Kenny Lewis didn’t care about the wealth or the acclaim no - nor was he pressed by grandeur or self acclaim - lest at first - no - what Kenny Lewis really wanted. More than any Gold - was the adventure - the chance to use his gadgets among his friends.
And I really wanted that too - I wanted something to do - something to call my own. Life as an Elderman was sparsely demanding - and I needed something to get me out of this slunk.
Knowing that Kenny Lewis would never assemble such a crew - nor that he would admit that he needed help at all - as - so I made short work of it.
We needed
Someone with a boat
Someone who knew how to use the boat
Someone who knew where to look - based on maps and such
Someone to help us take the raw materials off the island - into the boat - transport it from Branford to Beathany and make some route along 95.
Someone to help with security -

I pinned up the first two items as things to worry about later. What I was most interested in was someone who knew how to read maps. Unfortunately, the only person I associated with maps - was an elderly Librarian woman I befriended while working out of the library - Deb Miller - Deb once showed me a collection of New Haven maps. Perhaps she had one of the thimble island.

The other problem we faced early on - was detection. I didn’t know the legalities exactly - so I consulted my friend Brenn, who was some hot shot law student out of quinipaic who had a chip on his shoulder as he wasn’t going to Yale but still lived in East Rock.

The more people I added - the more possibilities of why would anyone help us - I wasn’t planning on sharing any of the loot - nor wanted to make any promises. If it were up to me - the only ones who would have the loot - were the looters who formulated the plan for the loot in the first place - mainly Kenny Lewis and myself. Kenny would take 70 - I would take 30 - and eventually get Kenny to invest some of his 70 into the beer venture I’ve been dreaming.

Sample Scene #1
debating the plan
Amid a living room of Kenny Lewis’ apartment that overlooks East Rock - the crew hatch a plan.
Chris, and the rest of the gang are squished onto a futon as Kenny paces back and forth.
Kenny
So - high tide happens once - every-day - 365 -
Chris
Yes - the same way it’s been happening for billions of years.
Kenny
And this tide - it happens at different times - and you Mr. Chris - have a chart - and that chart tells you - allows you to pinpoint - Mr. Chris - when - exactly - we can cross over
Chris
Tide charts - yes - we got that.
Kenny
So what is the problem?
Chris (Chris starts counting fingers)
How are we going to take the gold - when
Kenny
And we have to make it out to the island before the tide reaches.
Chris
Again, yes.
Kenny
So what if we
High tide happens once every day -
What time
I am not sure look it up
“Says it hits - blah blah blah”
Okay so what does that mean?
You tell me
You could walk out on low tide - yeah Chris?
Technically Yes - but you have to come back soon or grab a boat
How long can we camp there?
Chris: What if we do if we actually find - a garbage bag full of coins?
Garbage bag filled with coins?
I mean
I think we need three days
Three days to find the treasure?
Well - we can do a lot in three days - why would it take so long?
Can’t you see - can’t you see that we have to create some legend around New Haven - what is the Legend of New Haven? Nothing - see yo don’t know. We got a bunch of yale kids coming in and out - we got a lot of homeless folks yelling - this is our chance to come together - to rally behind some shared hero -
And whose going to be the hero? You?
No.
It’d be a pirate who repented and did the right thing. Who left his earthly treasure on the coast of Milford -
It shouldn’t take long.
But we need to hatch a plan and we need help.
Sample Scene #2 - Make Music for Me
Goals of the scene:
Midway through the film there needs to be a point of clarity of how ridicoulus everything is
This character is not involved in the plot of the story - but in Kenny’s life
“My heart feels like it wants the spring - and here we are - amid the heat of summer”
It’s like gravity and all of the birds are acting in full swing -and it’s great - and it’s beautiful - but I want the
Sample Scene #3
Fire Escape Doubts
As Kenny and Anna sit among the fire escape of the Kebabian house
Sample Scene #4
Confronting Chris
Kenny writes Chris and told him - yes - he is just a bullshit artist - a hatcher of dreams - he didn’t know what to do with the power given so he thought he’d make a big distraction - is that what you want to hear?

# On the day we set sail

I woke up that morning and wanted to go back to bed. I scrolled through my instagram feed and pitied everyone out there who posted. For me, lest in that season, posting was a sign of weakness - a sign to get forth the thing that one ought to bring forth - it was a sign of utter weakness - all the way through - and yet here I was - consuming each feed.

I didn't want to do what I had to do - nay - we set up all the little details of this trip, who was going to man it - how it was going to be arranged - I thought over the sequence of the day over and over - and made timeline after timeline - sometimes of the same events - on a piece of paper. I would do this thing- from which I loved to do, where I would write the same list over and over again - in different places - in different states of the house - or in the room - or of mind. To see if I have reached the same conclusions - to see if therew as any hope in my thinking. For there is nothing like having a tednency for se;f-criticl - lest that could lead so completely towards self-loathing.

Regardless of al lthis - I knew that I had to be done. So I stuffed the sadness deep down - and headed towards the kitchen to make a keriug. Fresh stocked with some wal-mart - went out and poured a coffee. Went outside and soaked it in .It was a bright day in March - the kind of day that makes you realize that not everything is cold for at ime.

For the seasons of the havens are moved much too quick - there becomes spring - and then summer - and then autum nand tne the fall. As soon as one is used to one season - boom - it is over - and we now must march on to another. As soon as I was getting used to spring -boom the summer - and as I am getting older (27 at the time of writing this) I feel like time is slipping on and on.

But march was still delightful in the havens

I was the first one up by a mile.

I thought of the people i Knew in the havens. Thought of the quality of their character - judged them - realized that they really don't give a crap about me - that everyone is here just to be here - and that there is nothing really unifying us. At least Josh and his crew had a church family - whatever cult that was - I thought of joining - for at least they stick together - based around some common belief. Truth be told - I had no idea what they were all about - them born-again Christians as they have called it - and nor did I want anything to do with them - but they were so damn persistenat with inviting me to lunch - and my stomach - hadn't seen the grace of food in hours and hours - i thought I would entertain there notions for 45 min - as I snacked on their food. It was a fair deal I traded. At least these Christians have food - unlike the jews that I've met - nor the muslims - nor the peddling on the ground - these guys were meeting at panera bread. So long as it wasn't a bowling alley - i was settled.

Anyway - I was rambling and unfocused - later that afternoon - we were going to set sail - but my mind was a million miles away froom the problem .I was hungy. So I ate.

# And then a knock

And then a knock came at the door - which was weird - who knocks anympre.

It was a man - mid 40s - dressed nicely in a suit - with silver grey and pepper - and just looked too goodlooking for the outfit he wearing, a small shorts and a long baggy pants - as if he was just coming out.

He introduced himself as Rick Christoff - a local developer - looking to run for mayor. I shook his hands - and in my pajamas admitted that I was an alderman.

No way! exclaimed he "That is amazing!" Look at me
